O’Reilly SHS murder case: Accused is 19 years – Prosecution confirms

The O’Reilly Senior High School student accused of the murder of a general arts student is 19 years old, the prosecutors handling the case have established.

When the case was called on Friday afternoon (Sept 20, 2024) at the La District Court, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Paul Osei Adjei, informed the court that the prosecution did not only rely on medical reports to ascertain the age but information from the school, the accused’s date of birth, and his National Health Insurance Scheme card confirmed that the accused was born on July 10, 2005.

The revelation comes after a court presided over by Adwoa Benaso Asumadu-Sakyi issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police to produce a report on the accused person’s age following confusion over the age.

Remand

The prosecutor prayed the court to remand the accused who is facing a provisional charge of murder, to help further investigations.

Chief Inspector Adjei assured the court that by next week, a duplicate docket would be forwarded to the Attorney-General for advice.

Ascertaining the accused person’s age was to help the court determine whether he should be tried as an adult or a juvenile.

With that determined now, the court would proceed with committal proceedings after the Attorney-General recommends the appropriate charge for the accused.

The case has been adjourned to October 7, 2024.
